The complete guide to pig butchering (sha zhu pan) crypto fraud — how scammers operate over weeks or months, the psychology they exploit, red flags at every stage, and what to do if you've been targeted.

What Is Pig Butchering?

'Pig butchering' (sha zhu pan in Mandarin — literally 'slaughter the pig') is a sophisticated long-con fraud originating in Southeast Asia that has become the dominant form of crypto investment fraud globally. The FBI estimates it caused over $3.5 billion in losses in 2025 alone.

The name reflects the scammers' methodology: they 'fatten the pig' (build trust over weeks or months) before the 'slaughter' (steal everything). Unlike quick scams, pig butchering involves sustained, sophisticated psychological manipulation.

The 7 Stages of a Pig Butchering Scam

Stage 1 — Initial Contact: A stranger contacts you via wrong-number text, dating app, LinkedIn, Instagram DM, or WhatsApp. The opening is always innocent — 'Oops, wrong number! Who is this?'

Stage 2 — Building Rapport: Over days or weeks, they become a friend or romantic interest. Conversations are warm, intelligent, and attentive. They share details about their 'successful life.'

Stage 3 — Introduction of Crypto: They casually mention they invest in crypto — often through a 'special platform' their uncle or financial advisor uses. They're making great returns.

Stage 4 — The Demo: They show you their platform, often sharing screen or profits. They offer to help you set up an account and start with a small amount.

Stage 5 — Early Profits: Your initial investment shows impressive gains. You can even withdraw a small amount successfully (this is deliberate — to build trust).

Stage 6 — Fattening: They encourage larger investments. You bring in savings, retirement funds, sometimes borrow money. The platform shows spectacular returns.

Stage 7 — The Slaughter: When you try to withdraw large amounts, fees appear. 'Tax payments.' 'Compliance deposits.' Each fee paid yields another reason you can't withdraw. The scammer eventually disappears with everything.

The Psychology Behind Why It Works

Pig butchering succeeds because it exploits human psychology systematically:

These tactics are so effective that victims include educated professionals, financial advisors, and law enforcement officers. Being 'smart' does not protect you — recognizing the pattern does.

Red Flags at Each Stage

🚩 A stranger contacts you via wrong number or out of the blue DM
🚩 They quickly become very attentive, warm, or romantic with no prior connection
🚩 They have an unusually perfect life (international business travel, luxury lifestyle)
🚩 They introduce a crypto investment 'opportunity' after building relationship
🚩 They use a platform that isn't a major, verifiable exchange (Coinbase, Kraken, Binance)
🚩 The platform shows unrealistically high returns (5%+ per week)
🚩 You can make a small withdrawal but not a large one
🚩 Fees or 'taxes' appear when you try to withdraw

If You're Currently Being Targeted

If you recognize these stages while an ongoing interaction is happening:

  1. Stop all contact immediately — do not explain or give them a chance to counter
  2. Do not invest any more money — any 'fee' to unlock withdrawal is additional theft
  3. Screenshot all conversations and transaction records
  4. Report to FBI IC3 (ic3.gov), FTC (reportfraud.ftc.gov), and your bank immediately
  5. Contact your bank about any wire transfers — some early-stage wire transfers can be recalled
  6. Tell someone you trust — shame is what scammers count on for silence
