Fake crypto wallet and exchange apps continue to appear in app stores despite security reviews. Learn how to identify and avoid counterfeit crypto apps before they steal your funds.
The Fake App Problem
Despite Apple's App Store review process, fraudulent crypto apps periodically appear. These apps impersonate legitimate wallets (MetaMask, Coinbase, Ledger Live) or exchange apps. They typically steal seed phrases during setup or redirect deposits to scammer wallets.
The FTC has documented millions in losses from fake crypto apps. Apple frequently removes them, but new ones appear regularly.
How to Identify a Fake Crypto App
- Check the developer name exactly โ fake apps use similar but not identical names (e.g., 'MetaMask Inc' vs 'MetaMask LLC')
- Check the review history โ fake apps have recent publication dates and few reviews; legitimate apps have years of reviews
- Verify via the official website โ go to MetaMask.io, Coinbase.com, or Ledger.com and use THEIR link to the App Store
- Check download numbers โ legitimate apps have millions of downloads; fake apps have hundreds
- Read negative reviews carefully โ complaints of funds disappearing are serious warning signs
The Safe Download Protocol
- Go directly to the official company website (type it in โ don't click a link)
- Find their 'Download on App Store' button
- That button links to the genuine app
- Double-check the developer name matches what's on the website
Never download a crypto app via a link in a social media post, email, or message โ even if it appears to be from a legitimate source.
Report Fake Apps
If you find a fake crypto app: Report it to Apple via the App Store listing (flag icon โ Report a Problem). Also report to the real company being impersonated โ they can file DMCA takedowns faster.
